Our first stop on our cruise was Messina, Sicily but we took a bus into Taormina. It is set high on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The bus ride up to it was a little scary as I kept seeing the headline "cruise tour bus goes off cliff on way up to Taormina"... in my head as we turned each curve. But when we arrived the views are AMAZING! Turquoise water, mountain side houses...and then there was Mt. Etna..and is the largest active volcano in Italy. Isabella read a book about Pompeii and has been interested in volcanos for a while, so this was a very exciting site for her...and me too!
We walked down the pedestrian walkway in the village which was lined with gelato shops, souvenir shops and restaurants. The alleyways were usually stairways leading to more shopping and restaurants!
view of Mt. Etna from the center of Taormina..stunning...
