after our Paris fun with Grandpa and Nana, we headed to Normandy..Or Normandie as it's spelled there...to visit the beaches where the American troops landed during WWII. I was not prepared for that experience. It was very emotional to see the museum with the videos of the troops and the serene beautiful beach and to reflect on what really happened on D-Day to so many men. And visiting this area with my father in law, an Vietnam Veteran, made the experience that much more memorable. Walking around with Brad and Mack is like walking with wikapedia. I am historically challenged so it was really neat to learn..again...all about the history of Omaha and Utah beaches.
Sitting in a plastic bag at the edge of the beach, Brad found this note and picture someone left....very touching...
a map of the journey of each division
the top to pictures below are the view that the Germans would have had on the beach when the Am. landed...
the bottom two pictures are the view the Am. would have had when they landed...(minus Brad and the girls) you can see that the Germans definately had an advantage being high above the beach.
